Our October Client of the Month is Carla Griesch! In Carla’s time as a Gym Laird client, she has grown to not only become stronger physically, but also changed her lifestyle for the better. Carla exemplifies what it means to train smarter, not harder and her progress inside and outside the gym is a true testament to that. We thank Carla for being such a great client and you can read her own testimonial below!

“I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) when I was in college. With PCOS, it’s been a constant battle trying to maintain my weight and just feel good. Over the years, I’ve tried many different things to feel better, from lots of cardio and eating less to lifting weights and Paleo. There were many doctors along the way that just wanted to give me prescriptions for my symptoms (migraines, fatigue, excess facial hair, trouble losing weight, irregular cycle) or they said it was just normal to have these issues with PCOS and nothing could be done. I persevered and did a lot of reading and learning on my own thinking there had to be a better way.

Just before I started training at Gym Laird Strength & Conditioning, I’d been training intensely 5-6 times per week and wasn’t getting any closer to my goal. Instead I was tired all the time, had to constantly talk myself into going to the gym much less make it through the workouts, and I didn’t feel that healthy. When I first came to the group classes, I was adding that in addition to the 5-6 times I was already training. Needless to say, it didn’t take long for Jim to tell me I was working too hard to feel the way I did. Thankfully Jim cared enough to ask how I felt and he assured me I could feel better and look better with just 2-3 days of training per week. I thought there was no way that could work for me since 5-6 days of training wasn’t working – surely I just needed to do more not less. I eventually decided to give Jim’s way a try and ditch the other stuff because I was so tired of the other ways not working and 2-3 days a week sounded so appealing.

At first, it was mentally challenging to train less and train in a new and different way. Many days I felt like I wasn’t doing enough at the gym but I kept at it and listened to what Jim recommended. The harder part came when I was a year in and I felt much better but still wasn’t seeing the physical changes I’d been hoping for. In fact the opposite had happened, I’d actually gained weight and a few clothing sizes. For years before coming to Gym Laird I’d already been following a Paleo style diet and Jim recommended a few tweaks here and there but nothing was clicking. Finally he recommended Carb Nite and that’s when things started to turn around. It’s taken a great deal of experimenting and tweaking to figure out what works for me and even today I still have to make small changes as I go. Thankfully with the combo of Jim’s help and Carb Nite, I’ve been able to feel even better along with losing 50 pounds and 4 pants sizes. The whole journey has taken almost 2.5 years and I’m still not at the goal I once thought was impossible to reach but I’m very close. The most amazing part to me is I train with Jim 2 times per week, walk as much as I can, focus on my sleep and stress management, and follow Carb Nite. That’s it – nothing crazy or drastic and it’s something I can easily maintain. It’s taken a whole lot of prayers, persistence, and patience to get where I’m at today and the road wasn’t without its struggles but all of the determination has paid off and gratefully I’ve had the help of Gym Laird along the way.

I’m thankful to Jim, Lucy, and Emily for sharing their knowledge. Most importantly it amazes me how much they truly care. I’m also thankful for Faith and Michael who’ve been my 6:30 AM buddies from the start not to mention they’ve provided a lot of inspiration. Gym Laird has made such a positive difference in my life and I’ll be forever grateful.”

Thank you Carla for your amazing story! We love having you as a part of the Gym Laird community!
